LA Photo Curator
Laurie Frietag invited me to be a part of 2024/21 Women’s Life’s Work, in which each woman describes a bit about what that phrase means to them.
“I had a mentor who used to say again and again that “you can only show your work for the first time, once, so choose wisely.” At the time and for many years afterwards I believed this to be tantamount to supreme truth. It was utterly paralyzing. I feel that I missed out on countless opportunities waiting for my voice to be perfected.
My belief now, in my forties, is that there will always be through line. There will always be YOU in your work. Explore the topics and materials that you are inspired by, and allow process and discovery to work their magic.”

Interview in the September 2023 Issue of Ebby Magazine
Honored to have been selected as one of LA Photo Curators’ top 40 of 2023. My image ‘Panache’ will be included in the upcoming Siblings book.
I was just about to walk out the door and board a plane for Albuquerque in November 2022 when I felt a little tickle in my throat. One covid test later and I most certainly was not going anywhere. Center allowed me a raincheck for the following year, which turns out to have been a major win, as the temperatures were in the 40’s and 50’s instead of 2° in 2022. A three day event meant I could rock my best jumpers and befriend only those who showed up in COLOR.
I was the yahoo dragging a suitcase filled with 8 one of a kind framed collages AND a portfolio of silver gelatin prints (just in case) up and down those stairs again and again, but Brad and Rocky made it all possible with VIP room placement and the most ridiculous, spin-to-win ride available at Hertz. Good times were had and friendships were made.

The other art fair
Part of my booth at The Other Art Fair at Barker Hangar in Los Angeles.. The show is hosted by Saatchi and they put on a great fair with DubLab DJs and world class artists. I loved the experience. It was clear that people were really hungry for art going experiences after a long pandemic.

Forging Reflections in the sun
Forging Reflections in the Sun presents the works of Natalie Obermaier that are the result of her 2021 artist-in-residence at Full Circle Fine Art. The selected pieces - sculptures, paper weavings, and solarized photographs - invite us to continually question and renew our perspectives, reorient the way we view ourselves, value each other, and displays layers of history and memory for us to radically reimagine the very thing we inhabit our entire lifetime, our bodies.
Catalyst Contemporary Gallery, 523 N Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201 May 13th to July 2022
A virtual walk through is available here, and the works are still available for purchase there. It’s the coolest.

IntertWined: images of connection
Winning the jurors prize at The Living Image exhibit led to a “solo” exhibition at The Halide Project in Philadelphia, PA. The show entitled Intertwined: Images of Connection, used my work as the cornerstone of the Spring Invitational Exhibition and paired 12 of my images with those of Marc LeClef (@marcleclef) and Maurene Cooper (@vanitytintype). The show ran from May 15th to June 26th, 2022.
There was a zoom artist talk on May 16th, 2022, which you can find here: Light Talk with Natalie Obemaier at The Halide Project . A casual conversation between Dale Rio, who curated the exhibit, and I in which I awkwardly share a weird chronology of my life. If you fast forward to the end you can see a little collage of some of my favorite “stand in” photos.

I spent a perfect autumnal month engrossed in the freedom of making. Brian Miller introduced me to Forte Elegance paper, which I fell hopelessly in love with and then purchased all that remained on the internet. It is now extinct and I may never recover, but I think I honored it well. November 2021.

CURATOR'S STATEMENT:
As the practice of photography moves farther away from the tactile process of winding film through a camera and long meditative hours spent in the wet darkroom, the contemporary digital photographer is now experiencing an entirely different relationship to the image. With the proliferation of digital capture, with Photoshop replacing the darkroom, and instantaneous digital printing at the push of a button, photographs are now equally a product of the mind and technology, with the ability for limitless reproduction.
In response to this loss of the evidence of the artist’s hand, a number of artists are reconsidering the potential of an image with a move towards making rather than taking photographs.
